There are a number of things to consider as you begin your family building journey using egg donation, and one such consideration during the egg donor selection process is whether to choose a proven or first-time egg donor to help you in your journey. There are benefits to both, and we’re going to share them with you!
Proven Egg Donor
Proven egg donors are those candidates who have undergone an egg donation cycle in the past. Selecting a proven egg donor provides your physician the advantage of viewing previous cycle history, including a documented response to medication and prior screening results. This may not mean you’ll be able to skip the screening process, or that you’ll be able to waive screening expenses even if some screening results are accepted, or even that the egg donor will respond similarly and have a similar cycle outcome, but there’s some history to give you an idea of how your cycle may unfold. Too, a proven egg donor knows what to expect, both in terms of the demands before the cycle and the commitment required during the cycle.
First-Time Egg Donor
There are a number of reasons hopeful parents select first-time egg donors. First, by considering first-time egg donors, a broader search allows for more egg donors to consider, and a better likelihood of finding the right donor candidate with the desired characteristics or personality traits important to you for your future family (read HERE for more about finding the perfect match). Second, there may be no waiting time to begin an egg donation cycle. Further, first-time egg donors often have lower compensation, and finally, most first-time egg donors are eager to begin their first journey, and are often more willing to accommodate the cycle, providing fewer restrictions and/or black-out dates.
At the end of the day, the egg donor selection process is a personal decision for you and your future family, and when faced with the decision of choosing a proven or first-time egg donor, the best advice we can provide simply remind you to listen to your heart. In choosing an egg donor, you are selecting the genetics and potentially some of the personality of your future family.
