At the request of the fertility center where your egg retrieval procedure will take place, you are required to have an adult egg retrieval companion with you on your designated egg retrieval day. An adult companion is required for a number of reasons.
First, at discharge following your egg retrieval procedure, you will be strongly advised not to operate heavy machinery (including driving a car), as anesthesia may affect your coordination and reaction time. Your adult egg retrieval companion should be available to assist with your transportation arrangements, either driving you himself/herself or arranging for a car service to and from your hotel. Special Note: an Uber/Lyft driver is not a suitable replacement for a trusted adult companion on egg retrieval day.
Second, you will want to avoid making important (especially legal binding) decisions on egg retrieval day, as the anesthesia administered during your egg retrieval procedure may impair your ability to make sound decisions. Your trusted adult egg retrieval companion should be available to help ensure you don’t make such decisions while still under the effects of anesthesia.
Finally, the medication administered during egg retrieval, and the pain relievers prescribed afterward, may cause drowsiness or dizziness, or leave you feeling a bit disoriented. Most likely, you’ll want to limit your post-retrieval activities on retrieval day to a comfortable recovery in your hotel room, while your trusted adult egg retrieval companion helps with such things as picking up prescriptions, arranging meals, and coordinating any other activities that require effort to ensure an easy recovery process for you.
The cost of your egg retrieval companion’s travel arrangements is covered by your hopeful parents, and our office will work with you to ensure applicable arrangements (by plane, train, or personal vehicle) are coordinated well in advance such that you do not need to worry about your retrieval day companion in the days immediately preceding your retrieval procedure. Our goal is to ensure your egg retrieval week (including your egg retrieval day) is minimally stressful.
